Diffident Edgar Manson arrives in Edinburgh from Paris brimming with expectation. He has come to work on a translation of the philosopher David Hume and to soak up an atmosphere of enlightened academic calm. Yet almost immediately he meets the witty, anarchic Harry Sanderson who invites him home to dinner with his beautiful, younger, artist wife. Edgar’s deepest instincts have always been to hold passion and disorder at bay but before he can help it his meticulously ordered life is thrown into chaos. Drawn into the Sandersons’ troubled marriage, Edgar must confront both his own deepest fears from the past and his present growing attraction to the beguiling Carrie.
