Faber and Faber
Seventeen-year-old Abike Johnson is the favourite child of her wealthy father. Living in a sprawling mansion in Lagos, protected by armed guards and ferried everywhere in a huge black jeep, she often find herself feeling lonely behind the high walls of her house. Then, one day, she catches the eye of an attractive hawker on the roadside and buys an ice cream from him. It is an encounter that is going to change everything. As the young couple grapple with their feelings for each other and grow closer, they defy the prejudices of Nigerian society and the wishes of Abike’s controlling father. However, as revelations about the past begin to surface, Abike and the hawker are forced to re-evaluate their relationship and, ultimately, choose where their loyalties lie.
